ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A HURRICANE?

When you ask yourself if you are prepared for a hurricane (or tropical storm) and the answer is “I think so”, you are not truly prepared.

What does being prepared for a hurricane truly mean?

1. You will need a safe place to weather the storm. This might be in your home – one that is fully protected with code-compliant shutter/glass protection. Or, it might be in an emergency shelter-which you should know the name and location of a primary chioce and a back up in the event it is full.

2. Food and Water Reserves. Have enough “new” none-perishable food and water in your home to last the entire family for a few weeks. Please check your lables so your food and water are still usable.

3. Disaster supplies. You should have a good stock of flashlights, batteries, tarps, plastic bags, bad-weather clothing, toiletries and other essentials to get through the aftermath of a storm.

4. Home Protection & Security. Have your protection plan in place so that all family members know what their roles are, where materials are located, what needs to be done to execute the plan in the event of an emergency.

5. Family Communication. Have a communication plan in place in the event that you are separated and/or with family members out of state that my act as a contact person. Everyone should know the plan and be prepared to execute it.

6. Family Pets. Since shelters will not accepts pets, know what you are going to do with your furry loved ones before an emergency situation.

7. Vehicles. Gas levels should remain at half a tank at all times throughout the hurricane season so you aren’t stuck in what may be a very long line with you are faced with an emergency evacuation situation

8. Last but not least – INSURANCE. Do you have a policy in place that will provide the coverage you need in the event of a hurricane? Remember that standard insurance does NOT cover flooding and you will need a special policy for that. You should know: who your carrier is, their claims phone number, your policy number, and what your coverage is. If you do not, please speak with your agent before a storm comes and many suspend writing new coverage during this time period.
